the black jazz records story



Hard as it may be to believe, the only Black-owned jazz label prior to the founding of Black Jazz Records in 1969 was Sunshine Records way back in 1921. Pianist Gene Russell's concept and vision were pretty similar to those of Charles Tolliver and Stanley Cowell, founders of Strata-East Records, and though both labels issued their debut releases in 1971, Black Jazz had actually been founded two years prior in Oakland.
